Register for a new 8 week season starting November 7th, 2017

This program is for seniors 55 and up. Each season is approximately 8 weeks in duration and offers participants a minimum of 28 hours of table tennis related activities including coaching and practice time.

Make new friends, have fun, live well, and find your place in the wonderful world of table tennis!

Learn to Play

The Learn to Play program is aimed at new and beginner players over 55 years old developing & improving rallying skills.  Table Tennis rallying is actively keeping the ball on the table over consecutive shots, with the goal to continue the rally as long as possible at a pace that is comfortable for both players. This fundamental table tennis skill will help you reap the many benefits of the sport!

The Learn to Play program is divided into seasons which are 8 weeks long. Each season includes weekly 2-hour Class Sessions on Tuesdays starting at 1:00PM and weekly 2 hour Extra-Practice Time on Thursdays starting at 1:00PM.

During Classes, a coach will lead group discussions, demonstrate new skills, assign practice partners, and use the multi-balls training tool.

During Extra-Practices, it is up to you to direct the practice. A good idea is to continue learning the skills picked up during the previous class with your practice partner (try to confirm with your Tuesday practice partner that you can both attend the Extra-Practice). A coach will be available from whom you may ask questions, for example you may receive tips, or learn helpful drills that can help improve the skills you are trying to improve.

The Learn to Play program offers:

8x Classes - Tuesdays 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

8x Extra-Practices - Thursdays  1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Table Tennis is a wonderful sport that can be enjoyed at any age, with any ability, and you can play it all-year-round. It is a low-impact sport that can be enjoyed into old age as a means of exercise, social interaction, and healthy competition.  It has proven cognitive benefits too as it keeps the mind focussed and trained for making quick decisions on and off the court!

The many benefits include:

  • Lower resting heart rate

  • Lower body fat

  • Improve hand-eye coordination

  • Improve cognitive function: The speed, spin and placement of the ball are crucial. There is a lot of thinking, planning, and strategizing that takes place during any table tennis rally. Attention, anticipation, decision making, problem solving, are all core table tennis attributes and basic cognitive processes.

The inspiration behind this program comes from the 2012 documentary film Ping Pong (Never Too Old for Gold) which follows 8 players with 703 years between them, all with the goal of competing at the World Championships of Table Tennis.

The mantra Never Too Old for Gold are words to live by.  Beyond the literal sense these words exemplify the maintaining of a positive attitude as a person ages, and breaking away from preconceived notions of what old age means.

"It is about ageing, mortality, friendship, ambition and love. The stories stay with you for hours, weeks, after the credits have rolled. But perhaps its most powerful achievement is to leave us with a more humane conception of sport, and of life itself."
Matthew Syed - The Times review of the film Ping Pong: Never Too Old for Gold

We hope that through this program you will appreciate table tennis as a safe and enjoyable sport for years to come!
